Making With Place is a research-led project exploring how contemporary ceramics can emerge directly from the geology, ecology and archaeological history of the Yorkshire coast. What began as an investigation into local clay has expanded into a broader exploration of every ingredient that forms a ceramic object. Rather than viewing clay as the only material with a connection to place, the project asks whether glazes, colourants and firing materials can also be sourced from the landscape. Beach sand, woodland ash, seaweed ash, local mineral pigments and local clays become part of the same conversation.
